Texas History

Welcome,

Yes, it is Monday! This is the Four Week of the 3rd Six Weeks! Please continue your phenomenal behavior as we continue through this school year. Let's keep our behavior and attendance going strong for the Third Six Weeks! Ten days closer to Christmas Break, hold your heads up! This week we will be discussing The Life of People in the Colonies and well as the Growth of the Colonies. Monday, we will present on Early Colonist of Texas. Tuesday, we will continue the Growth of the Colonies. Wednesday, we will work on an interactive activity that will help you understand the reasons behind colonization and take a ten question quiz. Thursday, we will focus on the Life of the People in the Colonies. Friday, you will have a substitute.

Erasmo Seguin
If Texas gave a Medal of Honor, the first one should go Erasmo Seguin. This guy not only resisted tyrany, he sacrificed his own personal belonging and welfare in his fight against it. He and General Cos had a history of antagonism before the revolution, so when General Cos was one of the military leaders of the fight for independence, for Erasmo Sequin, it was personal. But, he could go out of his way to befriend his companions. He avidly supported Stephen F. Austin and invited Davy Crockett into his own home when Crockett arrived in San Antonio. Seguin gave his own supplies to provison the Alamo prior to the final siege! His actions prove Seguin was prepared to give everything he had for the cause of freedom, even if he had to give his life as well. The city of Seguin, TX, 36 miles east of San Antonio, is named after him.

Texas History

Welcome,

Yes, it is Monday! This is the Third Week of the 3rd Six Weeks! Please continue your phenomenal behavior as we continue through this school year. Let's keep our behavior and attendance going strong for the Third Six Weeks! You will receive progress reports on December 2nd at Peter Piper Pizza. Monday, we will discuss about the Anglo American Colonization of Texas. Tuesday, we will continue our lecture on Colonization. Wednesday, we will work on an interactive activity that will help you understand the reasons behind colonization. Thursday, we will start on a new lesson "Growth of the Colonies".

Stephen F. Austin

Stephen F. Austin is often considered “the Father of Texas” for his work in establishing the first Anglo American colony and then helping to form the Republic. Austin grew up in Missouri and was studying law there when his father, Moses Austin, first thought about starting a colony in Texas. Although he did not strongly support his father's plan, Stephen agreed to help. In 1821 his father died, and Austin took over the task of establishing the colony.

After Mexico won independence from Spain, Austin secured the new government's approval of the land contract. When Mexican officials later began putting restrictions on colonization, he traveled to Mexico City in 1822, a journey of about 1,000 miles (1,609 km), and persuaded them to change the laws. In 1833, Austin again traveled to Mexico City, this time to deliver petitions seeking the freedoms for Texan settlers that were included in the Convention of 1833. On his way back to Texas in January of 1834, Austin was arrested on the suspicion of trying to incite a rebellion, and he was held in prison for a year. By the time he was able to return to Texas in 1835, the push for independence had begun. Austin joined the movement and fought in the Texas Revolution. Once independence was won, he served as secretary of state in the new government. He died in December of 1836 at the age of 43.
